Jazz from Goa, India

Hello Panjim interview with Colin D'Cruz-one of India's most accomplished jazz musicians.

HP- Tell us something about yourself.
CD- I'm a Mumbai goan looking forward to being a Goa goan very soon. I've reached two important milestones in my career. One is, after decades of playing everyone elses music i've development a style of my own and the biggest compliment I get these days is when someone recognizes my bassplaying on some tune they heard somewhere, they call up to confirm and..voila! The other milestone is probably every musicians dream, to produce music out of my own studio. A dream that will come true for me within this year when I setup my own state of the art studio in Sangolda. I've also setup an organisation called Jazz Goa with the help of fellow musicians and jazz enthusiasts in Goa.

Soul Yatra-Indian jazz ambassadors

Mumbai based jazz ensemble Soul Yatra is back after a very successful Asia-Pacific tour. Appointed as the Indian ambassadors of jazz by Hennessy XO, Soul Yatra has now been signed on as brand ambassadors and will perform several international events for Hennessy over the next two years. This is heartening news indeed for Indian jazz artistes who have been struggling for decades to find a voice in the international jazz arena. Jazz may have originated in America but today this form of improvised music is widely being accepted as the global sound of music. Jazz has always been alive and evolving drawing from worlwide cultures in it's journey towards global acceptance. Indian classical musicians in particular, have made a huge contribution to jazz since Indian classical music is all about improvisation-the keyword to jazz.

Jazz news from India

Jazz in India has arrived, especially amoung Goans who have consistently produced their own legends in this great art form that originated in America. Hennessy cognac has supported jazz for decades through a series of 'Hennessy smooth jazz concert tours' featuring American artistes signed on by the famed Blue Note label. Breaking tradition for the first time, Hennessy has signed on an all Goan jazz band based in Mumbai for a series of performances at some of the best jazz clubs around the world. The band 'Soul Yatra' has been chosen as the Indian ambassadors of jazz-a form of music that's widely being accepted as the global sound of music.
